WHAT IS NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE?

The Canadian Association of Naturopathic Medicine defines Naturopathic Medicine as a distinct primary health care system that blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. Naturopathic Doctors practice with the following principles in mind:

1.     First, do no harm. Safety is at the forefront of Naturopathic care.

2.     Support the body’s inherent ability to heal itself. Understand that the body already has processes in place to heal/recover and so, unless necessary, these processes should be optimized to facilitate healing.

3.     Identify and treat the cause of disease. Find the “why” behind symptoms in order to more effectively address disease

4.     Doctor as teacher. Naturopathic Doctors invest time in educating patients on their health & potential reasons behind their symptoms and how their daily habits might be impacting their health.

5.     Treat the whole person. Health is physical, mental & emotional – all aspects depend on one another.

6.     Prevention. Guidance on risk factors and how to reduce risk factors day-to-day.

WHAT DOES A NATUROPATH DO?

A Naturopathic Doctor, also known as a Naturopath is considered a regulated primary care provider in Calgary, Alberta. As a primary care provider, Naturopathic doctors are trained to diagnose conditions by completing the following with each new case:

1)    A thorough health intake

2)    A complaint-oriented physical examination

3)    An assessment including review of lab testing & imaging reports. In Calgary, Naturopaths have the ability to order blood tests in addition to other advanced functional lab tests including but not limited to: the DUTCH hormone test, comprehensive stool analysis such as the GI-MAP test or the GI-360 test, SIBO testing, food sensitivity testing and more!
