Heavy Metal Burden & Chelation Therapy

Updated: Feb 24

Do you experience any of the following: cognitive impairment, memory loss, difficulty concentrating, chronic fatigue/pain, immune dysfunction, mood swings, hormonal symptoms, headaches and food sensitivities? If you answered YES and you have tried many treatments with little long-term success, you could have higher than normal levels of heavy metals accumulating in your body.

Chelation therapy has been around for a while and is used to remove heavy metals from the body. We know that everything around us carries or produces environmental toxins - the air we breathe, the dishes we eat from and the chemicals we use daily. Heavy metals and toxins are everywhere and every individual’s body removes these toxins at variable rates. Heavy metals become an issue once they accumulate in your tissues and become “toxic” to your internal environment. As a result, you start experiencing symptoms that don’t go away!

At the clinic, we provide safe and effective chelation testing to determine the amounts of certain heavy metals in your body that may be contributing to your symptoms, whilst negatively impacting your quality of life. High levels of any particular heavy metal or a combination of heavy metals may manifest as a variety of symptoms.

We know that fish, depending on the type, can carry high levels of MERCURY. Research has revealed high levels of mercury in tuna fish and high fructose corn syrup! High fructose corn syrup is present in a number of processed and sugar-laden foods! Mercury tends to store in organs such as the liver, gut, eyes, brain and kidneys. High levels of mercury exposure (and particularly its storage in the brain) in children have been associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Apart from other organs, LEAD can be stored in our bones! Conditions related to the degradation of bone matrix can cause calcium to move out of the bones. This also means that the lead that is also stored in bones has the ability to leech out with the calcium as well! When this happens, we have increase lead in our blood circulation. An interesting example is lead exposure in utero. Due to hormonal changes during pregnancy, calcium is often shifted out of the bones and into the blood circulation. If the mother has been exposed to lead throughout her lifetime, this increases the risk of lead being pushed into the circulation, too. Since the mother and fetus share the same circulation, the fetus is exposed to lead before birth. Yes! Lead exposure can start as early as that. Research is showing that high lead exposure in children is related to cases of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).

There are also other heavy metals that also can have an impact on mood, digestion, pain, fatigue and hormones. These include: CADMIUM, NICKEL, TIN, ALUMINUM and many more.

There are 3 potential chelating agents:

· EDTA (Ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid)

· DMPS (2,3-Dimercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid)

· DMSA (Dimercaptosuccinic acid)

The above chelating agents are administered either intravenously or orally and the route of administration and agent used depends on:

1. Status of your organ function (especially, liver and kidneys)

2. Heavy metals that we are targeting based on chelation test results

3. Any other health conditions

4. Age of the individual undergoing treatment.

Chelation testing measures heavy metal elimination in the urine and reveals a wide range of heavy metals and their respective levels in the body. One chelation test can determine the levels of a variety of heavy metals in the body. Every few chelation treatments, expect to receive a vitamin-mineral infusion. This is necessary to replenish any vitamins/minerals that are also pulled out by the chelating agents and to prevent any deficiencies in important nutrients.

Your naturopathic doctor specifically trained in Chelation Therapy will be able to determine if you are a suitable candidate for chelation testing and treatment and will conduct any blood chemistry tests necessary to ensure that you are able to tolerate treatments safely. Please note that not everyone is a candidate for chelation therapy.
