Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been used for years as a method for balancing the body and mind and helping to improve a variety of symptoms.

More recently, facial acupuncture has been shown to provide facial cosmetic benefits in tightening the skin surface and reducing the presence of fine wrinkles and lines on the face in a minimally invasive manner. In comparison to certain injection therapies now commonly used, facial acupuncture is a comparatively safer option for those who may be worried about risks of other rejuvenation therapies.

Facial acupuncture works by causing microtrauma with each needle inserted into the skin. This helps to promote collagen production and minor inflammation, which in turn helps to “plump” up the skin and fill in any fine lines and wrinkles.

Facial acupuncture utilizes small needles (both in length and gauge diameter) and so, typically 30-40 needles are used per treatment, depending on the particular areas the patient would like to focus in on. Not only does facial acupuncture help cosmetically, but it is also calming and helps to balance Qi ("energy" in traditional Chinese medicine) within the body. Some things to consider when coming in for facial acupuncture treatments:

  • Come with a bare face – no products or makeup, even though the area will be swabbed thoroughly, it is best to reduce the risk of infection when possible

  • Come in well-hydrated and after having eaten a well-balanced meal to prevent blood sugar changes

  • Expect a “pinching" sensation at the skin surface with each needles insertion, given the presence of pain receptors in the outer layer of the skin

  • It does take 5-10 treatments (depending on the individual) to see clinical results. Some patients will notice an improvement after the first couple treatments and others will notice an improvement in subsequent treatments

Your naturopathic doctor trained and licensed to practice acupuncture will review contraindications and potential side effects of treatments with you prior to your treatment.
