comprehensive stool analysis
A comprehensive stool analysis is a test that involves collecting one or more stool samples and sending it to the laboratory for examination. Stool analyses help to profile the microbiome in the gastrointestinal tract – the various organisms that live in our gut - by PCR DNA Analysis. For simplicity, there are good and bad bacteria in our gut that can trigger inflammation by way of the immune system.
Approximately 70% of our immune system is located in our gut via the Gut-Associated Lymphatic Tissue (GALT). This is why more modern research is focusing on how gut health impacts brain health, cardiovascular health, skin health, dental health and more. Research is teaching us that many forms of disease are rooted in the gut given how majority of our immune system is modulated there. Although research is ever-evolving, this is where the concept of the microbiome has garnered attention in its role in chronic disease.
This test may help to identify dysbiosis, which is characterized by an imbalance in gut bacteria. Although this test may benefit individuals with gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g. ulcers, chronic diarrhea, chronic constipation of unknown cause and more) and already-diagnosed conditions (e.g. Inflammatory Bowel Disease - Crohns & Ulcerative Colitis), it may also be helpful for individuals with unspecified skin conditions (e.g. autoimmune), joint pain, etc. The naturopathic recommendations are individualized to each case.
This test is recommended after other more obvious & serious health conditions have been ruled out by your health team, only if indicated by your naturopathic doctor.
Meeting with Dr. Mawji ND may help you learn about what types of testing may be the most beneficial and indicated for you. If recommended, this test like all other tests, remain optional.
