Integrative & Adjunctive Cancer Care

What is Adjunctive Cancer Care?

Naturopathic Integrative Cancer Care involves using both conventional and naturopathic approaches to managing cancer (i.e. Adjunctive Cancer Care). Our goal is to help you tolerate and complete your chemotherapy, radiation and hormonal/targeted therapy treatments and tolerate surgical procedures well, while improving your quality of life during, between and after treatments. You can expect a significant amount of patient education throughout your clinic visits. Please note that Dr. Mawji may make recommendations to stop certain supplements that you may be taking, because of interactions with your conventional medical therapies and for your safety! Not all supplements are appropriate during chemotherapy and radiation and not all supplements are appropriate in cancer processes. Contrary to popular belief, some supplements may actually hinder the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiation treatments and should not be taken during that time.  It is important that you receive the greatest benefit and potential from your conventional medical therapies!

Benefits of Naturopathic Integrative Cancer Care include:

  • improvement in overall quality of life

    • side effects from chemotherapy and radiation

    • pain management

    • energy levels

    • sleep

    • appetite/body weight maintenance

    • increased tolerability of various types of conventional cancer treatments

  • Aim to reduce the risk of recurrence

  • Aim to reduce the risk of metastasis

Naturopathic Integrative cancer care uses the most current research in oncology in order to educate the patient in and around new information and studies in chemotherapy, radiation, hormonal therapy, oral supplementation and intravenous/injection treatments.

**Note that different types and stages of cancer are approached from an individualized perspective and no two patients receive the same protocol for treatment.

Types of Cancer that can be treated from an integrative perspective:

  • Bladder

  • Brain

  • Breast (estrogen, progesterone, HER2 receptors)

  • Colorectal

  • Cervical

  • Esophageal

  • Hepatic (Liver)

  • Lung

  • Lymphoma

  • Ovarian

  • Pancreatic

  • Prostate

  • Skin

  • Testicular

  • Thyroid

  • Uterine

Oral Supplementation

Certain agents can increase the effectiveness of conventional treatments and work to target particular receptors on cancer cells, promoting cancer cell death or apoptosis. There are a select few naturally-derived agents shown to reduce the risk of recurrence and reduce the risk of metastasis. Your naturopathic doctor trained in integrative oncology can recommend the ideal supplements for your case, ensuring to avoid pharmacological interactions with any medications that you are currently taking for your health and in turn, to also ensure that you are not taking any agents that may reduce the effectiveness of conventional medical treatment.

Side Effect Management

Integrative cancer care particularly shines in its ability to help with its ability to manage side effects from chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and radiation therapy. These include but are not limited to:

  • nausea

  • decreased appetite

  • peripheral neuropathy (from "platin" group of chemotherapeutic agents e.g. oxaliplatin, cisplatin, carboplatin)

  • pain management

  • unintentional weight loss

  • appropriate dietary recommendations
