Naturopathic Integrative Cancer Care

What is Naturopathic Integrative Cancer Care?

Naturopathic Integrative Cancer Care involves using both conventional and naturopathic approaches to MANAGE cancer. Additionally, there is also knowledge that we can use in cancer PREVENTION. Our goal is to help you tolerate and complete your chemotherapy, radiation, hormonal/targeted therapy treatments and surgical procedures well (which are INTEGRAL in the management of all types of cancer), whilst improving your quality of life during, between and after treatments.

You can expect a significant amount of patient education throughout your clinic visits. Please note that our Naturopathic Doctor may make recommendations to stop certain supplements that you may be taking, because of interactions with your conventional medical therapies and for your safety! Not all supplements are appropriate during chemotherapy and radiation and not all supplements are appropriate in cancer processes. Contrary to popular belief, some supplements may actually hinder the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiation treatments and should not be taken during that time.  It is important that you receive the greatest benefit and potential from your conventional medical therapies!

Our Naturopathic Doctor has received advanced training in Integrative Cancer Therapies and is indeed a proponent of chemotherapy, radiation and other conventional medical treatments and is enthusiastic in working as part of your health care team. Our Naturopathic Doctor will also take the time to discuss with you why conventional medical treatments recommended by your oncologist and/or surgeon are important to complete.

***Please note that there is no cure for cancer and that Dr. Mawji cannot provide prognosis for any diagnosis. Naturopathic Integrative Cancer Care cannot provide a cure for cancer, but can help support patients through their health journey, as stated above.

Benefits of Naturopathic Integrative Cancer Care include:

  • improvement in overall quality of life

    • side effects from chemotherapy and radiation

    • pain management

    • energy levels

    • sleep

    • appetite/body weight maintenance

    • increased tolerability of various types of conventional cancer treatments

  • Aim to reduce the risk of recurrence

  • Aim to reduce the risk of metastasis

Naturopathic Integrative Cancer Care uses the most current research in oncology in order to educate the patient in and around new information and studies with chemotherapy, radiation, hormonal therapy, targeted therapy, acupuncture, lifestyle & nutrition counselling, oral supplementation and more.

**Note that different types and stages of cancer are approached from an individualized perspective and no two patients receive the same management protocol.

Side Effect Management

Naturopathic Integrative Cancer Care particularly shines in its ability to help manage side effects from chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and radiation therapy and more.

These can include but are not limited to:

  • nausea

  • decreased appetite

  • sleep disturbances

  • peripheral neuropathy (commonly seen from "platin" group of chemotherapeutic agents e.g. oxaliplatin, cisplatin, carboplatin)

  • pain management

  • unintentional weight loss

  • decreased nutritional requirements

Oral Supplementation

Certain therapies can increase the effectiveness of conventional treatments and therefore, can synergistically work to target particular receptors on cancer cells, promoting cancer cell death or apoptosis. There are a select few naturally-derived agents shown in academic literature to reduce the risk of recurrence and reduce the risk of metastasis.

Our Naturopathic Doctor trained in Naturopathic Integrative Cancer Care can recommend the appropriate supplements (only if required) for your case, ensuring to prevent pharmacological interactions with any medications that you may be currently taking for your health that may reduce the effectiveness of conventional medical treatments.

There is so much information out there on supplements that one can take during conventional treatments, but it is incredibly important that you seek the opinion of a qualified health professional to ensure that what you are taking is appropriate for you.
